# Tax rates

> Set up the taxes you charge and pay — one simple percentage, or a combined rate built from parts — and add your country's standard rates in one click.

Tax rates tell AccountFUN how much tax to add when you sell, and how much you paid when you buy. Set them up once under **Settings → Tax Rates**, then pick them on any invoice, bill, or expense line.

## Two kinds of rate

**Simple rate** — a single percentage. All most places need: a sales tax, a VAT, a GST. Give it a name (“GST 5%”), a rate, and you’re done.

**Rate built from parts** — for places where one checkout price includes several taxes. For example, in British Columbia a 12% sale is really \*\*GST 5%

* PST 7%\*\*. Build it as one 12% rate with two parts, and AccountFUN keeps track of each part separately — so when it’s time to file, your GST and your PST are already split out for you.

Each part of a combined rate has:

* a **name** (shown on invoices and reports),
* its own **percentage**,
* the **tax authority** it’s paid to, and
* the place in your books where that piece of tax is tracked.

Parts are shared

Name a part “GST” in one rate, and “GST” is offered again next time you build a rate — pick it from the suggestions and it stays consistent everywhere. AccountFUN shows which rates share a part, so the same tax is never counted twice.

## Managing your rates

The tax rates page lists each rate with its percentage (combined rates show their parts, like “GST + PST”), how much it’s been used, and whether it’s active.

* **Add or edit** happens in a pop-up window, not a separate page.
* **Deactivate** a rate to retire it without deleting history; it stops appearing on new lines.
* **Delete** a rate only when nothing uses it — otherwise AccountFUN tells you which documents would be affected first.

Used rates lock their percentage

Once a rate appears on saved transactions, its percentage is locked — you can still rename it or change where it’s tracked, but not the number itself. That’s deliberate: changing the percentage after the fact would silently rewrite your past documents. Create a new rate instead.

The built-in **Tax Exempt** (0%) rate is provided by AccountFUN and stays put.

## On your documents

Pick a combined rate on a line exactly as you would any other. The invoice’s totals then show a small breakdown — “GST $50, PST $70” — so both you and your customer can see what’s inside the tax line.

## Add your country’s standard rates in one click

**Settings → Region Specific Add-ons** is a directory of ready-made tax rate packs for countries around the world, grouped by region.

1. Find your country (your own region starts expanded).
2. Click **Apply** on its card. The standard rates for that country are added to your list.

Applying is **add-only**: it never changes or removes rates you already have, so pressing it twice does no harm. For Canada and the United States, the card asks which province or state you’re in first, so you get the right set.

The same page also lists country extras — for example, Hong Kong organizations can switch on **FPS QR payments** from here.

Who can do this

Anyone with sales or purchase access can *view* your tax rates. Adding, editing, and applying country packs needs the **Tax Rates** permission — Admins and Accountants have it by default. If you don’t see the buttons, ask your admin.

## Worked example: charging GST + PST in BC

1. **Settings → Region Specific Add-ons**, expand North America, find Canada, pick **British Columbia**, and **Apply**. You now have the BC rates.
2. On your next invoice line, pick the combined **BC 12%** rate.
3. The invoice totals show tax split as **GST 5%** and **PST 7%** — ready for two separate filings, with no spreadsheets in between.
